Capsicum (Cayenne, hot pepper) (Capsicum species). Cayenne stimulates circulation and digestion and causes perspiration. Outside the body, the heat of the oil of capsicum known as capsaicin, offers relief from the pain of arthritis and rheumatism. In topical form, capsaicin is also used to treat the pain associated with herpes zoster, commonly knows as “shingles”.

Cranberry(Vaccium macrocarpan). Helps to prevent urinary tract infections caused by E. coli bacteria, especially for those with recurrent infections.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officianale). Young leaves are used as salad greens, and as a diuretic in tea form. A mild laxative and aid to liver function can be made from the roots.

Echinacea (Echinacea purpurea and related species). Known also as Purple Cone Flower, this plant is a U.S. native used for treating many ills. The roots and leaves are mildly antibacterial and antiviral and are used to heal wounds. As confimed by German research, it can be used to strengthen the immune system and prevent and treat colds and flu.

Garlic (Allium sativum). Although the benefits are mild, garlic is antibacterial, antiviral, lowers high blood pressure and lowers fat and cholesterol in the bloodstream. Also a preventative for colds and flu.

Goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis). Another American herb, Goldenseal was used by Native Americans and early settlers as an antiseptic to heal wounds. It is soothing to inflamed mucous membranes and is used as a cold and flu treatment.

Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha). Hawthorn has a long history in folk and clinical medicine as a tonic for the heart. European physicians use the berry in preparations to treat mild angina, and appears to be safe to use for extended periods of time.

Passion Flower (Passiflora incarnata). Rather than promoting passion, Passion Flower has mild sedative and calming properties. It is used in combination with other herbs to treat conditions such as insomnia and related problems.
