Our Philosophy

The staff at Healthy Options believes we can help bridge the communication gap concerning the use of alternative/complementary medicine and traditional medicine by working with our clients to provide better, safer healthcare outcomes while integrating natural medicines and nutritional strategies to complement and support traditional medical protocols. Ideally, this would also involve the patient's primary care physician.

Dr. Chester Price
Integrative Practitioner
Co-Owner, Healthy Options

Dr. Chester Price (Pharm.D) has studied natural medicine for 20 years, including homeopathy (classical and homotoxicology), clilnical nutrition, herbal (botanical) medicine, functional medicine, bioresonance and biological terrain techniques. His traditional health care background combined with an understanding of a broad array of alternative modalities enables him to differentiate quackery from genuine, and can steer an unwary/uninfomed consumer away from the fringe elements of natural therapies.

Dr. Price received his Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) degree from Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA. This professional clinical program expanded his understanding of the methods used in traditional western medicine for patient diagnosis, selection of suitable treatment strategies and techniques of patient management, including the the application of appropriate monitoring parameters to ensure desired/intended patient outcomes. The use and interpretation of laboratory testing, and the proper selection and use of traditional prescription pharmaceuticals are also studied. The curriculum included considerable discussions regarding the selection, use, safety and effectiveness of many non-traditional health care modalities. Also discussed were the possible adverse effects of certain herbs and how to interpret and resolve possible drug/herb, herb/herb, herb/drug, drug/drug and drug/heb/nutrient issues. The use of herbs in certain health conditions and nutrient depletion caused by some herbs was discussed also.

Dr. Price's education and experience has enabled him to incorporate a client-centered approach to healthcare that is tailored to the unique needs of those who seek his counsel. Because beliefs, attitudes and motivations can all play a major role in overall wellness, he evaluates the physical, mental and emotional aspects of all his clients in order to provide a holistic treatment protocol.

What is Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

During peri-menopause and menopause, the body changes significantly. The critical levels of estrogen, progesterone and other hormones can fluctuate and drop, causing significant physiological difficulties. HRT attempts to replace levels of these key hormones as they decline, and often consists of combinations of multiple chemicals and/or natural hormones designed to counteract the negative effects of menopause. The replacement of missing or reduced hormones is important in the prevention of osteoporosis, heart disease and many types of cancers associated with menopausal changes.

is not a simple one to solve. The difficulty in balancing changing metabolisms with multiple medications make the pharmacists' role more important than ever in providing proper treatment.
With more than 15 million women approaching menopause every year, the problem of diagnosing and treating hormone imbalance and loss has become an important part of general medicine. The emphasis on maintaining a better quality of life and in improving health is at the forefront of women's health issues.health is at the forefront of women's health issues.health is at the forefront of women's health issues. The problem, however,
Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy, or NHRT, is a version of HRT that uses natural hormones rather than the synthetics that are often prescribed. While many of the side effets seen in synthetic-based HRT are reduced using natural hormones, there are still significant shortcomings to this approach. Unfortunately, a natural
hormone is not the same as a bio-identical hormone. For example, even though progesterone drived from some natural sources is chemically similar to its intended replacement, the human body can tell the difference. The copies just don't match the missing hormones and thus do not perform the anticipated replacement job for which they were designed. Progesterone hormones, which are natural but not identical, are not completely absorbed into the body and thus do not completely counteract the negative effects of estrogen often used in replacement therapy.
Using an identical match to replace a missing hormone is known as Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement Therapy. Using identical replacements and creating a custom approach to the replacement therapy is by far the most effective and safest form of hormone replacement therapy. This can best be accomplished through the compounding,
or customized creation of the various medications used in the treatment. A compounded, Bio-Identical Hormone Replacement regimen is one that can be formulated and dispensed based on the needs of each individual patient. Not only can the dosages of the various hormones be varied, but the administration technique can be varied as well. Some patients may tolerate oral medications while others may require a trransdermal or other method of dispensing the needed hormones.

With all the dangers and side effects, deciding which kind of hormone therapy is right for you can be a confusing and troubling time. Many women simply don't know where to start – Start with your physician. Ask your doctor if he or she prescribes Bio-Identical Hormones in replacement therapy.
